What Is Ritual Synbiotic+?

Ritual Synbiotic+ combines three components in a single delayed-release minibead capsule:

  1. Probiotic: LGG (Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, 11B CFU) + BB-12 (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, no CFU stated separately)
  2. Prebiotic: PreforPro (a bacteriophage-based prebiotic, 15mg)
  3. Postbiotic: Tributyrin (a butyrate precursor, 200mg)

The delayed-release minibead design is engineered to survive stomach acid and release in the colon — a scientifically sound approach shared with Seed’s nested capsule design.

The Science Behind Each Component

LGG (11B CFU): Well-evidenced for AAD prevention (Szajewska et al, PMID 25898944). Ritual’s dose is comparable to Culturelle.

BB-12: Associated with improvement in transit time and stool consistency (Szajewska et al, J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr 2012, PMID 22009574). Solid evidence for a second strain.

PreforPro: A bacteriophage-based prebiotic shown in a small human study to selectively support Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium populations (Dahl et al, Nutrients 2020, PMID 32630280). Evidence is promising but limited to a single study.

Tributyrin: A prodrug of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid important for colonocyte health. Butyrate has strong mechanistic evidence (Hamer et al, Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2008, PMID 17900326), but tributyrin supplementation in healthy adults has limited RCT data for consumer-relevant outcomes.

Pros

  • LGG and BB-12 both have strong evidence bases
  • Delayed-release design aids colon delivery
  • Clean-label, transparent ingredient sourcing
  • Convenient 3-in-1 — no need to stack separate supplements
  • Ritual brand has strong quality controls and supply chain transparency

Cons

  • $54/mo is among the highest prices in the category
  • Postbiotic (tributyrin) evidence in humans is limited
  • PreforPro prebiotic evidence base is nascent
  • No independent third-party testing results publicly available
  • Not well-matched to specific IBS subtypes

Bottom Line

Ritual Synbiotic+ is a high-quality, clean-label product for someone who values convenience, brand transparency, and wants a well-formulated 3-in-1 without doing the research themselves. If you have a specific gut issue (IBS-D, AAD, traveller’s diarrhoea), a single-strain product matched to that indication will outperform this at a lower price.

Note: probiotic effects are strain-specific. A study on LGG does not apply to other Lactobacillus strains.
